OnePlus Unveils OnePlus Nord 4, the Only Metal Unibody 5G Phone

New member of OnePlus Nord family launches in Milan with a heart-stoppingly beautiful design, latest flagship technology and a range of AI tools

SHENZHEN - OnePlus, a leading technology brand, launched the OnePlus Nord 4 at its Summer Launch Event in Milan. It is the only metal unibody device in the 5G era and harks back to a bygone era of smartphone design which many felt was behind us. As well as its three arresting colorways, OnePlus Nord 4 also continues to make flagship technologies more affordable with a leading chipset, up to 512GB RAM and AI tools that can help improve every part of its users lives, according to the official website of OnePlus.

"By combining a classic, refined and premium metal design with the latest flagship technology, OnePlus Nord 4 truly shows our dedication to bringing our users the best," said Kinder Liu, OnePlus President and COO. "OnePlus Nord devices are beloved around the world and I'm so proud of all the work our team has done on OnePlus Nord 4 I'm really excited to see what our passionate community of OnePlus fans make of the phone very soon."

A metal marvel

OnePlus Nord 4 is a masterpiece of metal design, measuring a mere 7.99mm thick and built from a single piece of aluminum milled to exacting standards. While many phones used to be made from metal, including the OnePlus 3T, the advent of 5G meant smartphones required more antennas than ever, and that meant construction which used less metal and more glass.

But OnePlus, driven by insight from its users, remembered the benefits metal brought to consumer technology. From shockingly thin laptops to strikingly unique automobiles, from high end fashion accessories to attention-grabbing speakers, metal products evoke a sense of beauty, of permanence and of strength. That’s why OnePlus used its Never Settle spirit to create OnePlus Nord 4, making several technological breakthroughs along the way. Breakthroughs like compact 5G antennas over 50% smaller than before, and like a redesigned motherboard that helps phones send and receive signals clearly. Breakthroughs that combined with OnePlus’s technical know-how to bring back a forgotten way of building a smartphone, reimagined for the next generation.

OnePlus Nord 4 is available in three separate colors, known as Nordtones, each designed to help its users stand out from the crowd, a key desire of OnePlus users. The first Nordtone, Obsidian Midnight, is a classic brushed gunmetal design. It’s dark and understated but projects strength and permanence. The second Nordtone is known as Mercurial Silver and features a 2D laser etched design, was created using more than 28,000 precise laser strokes. Finally, the third Nordtone is Oasis Green, revealed exclusively at OnePlus’s Summer Launch Event, and is a unique two-tone color scheme which looks vibrant and colorful, guaranteed to catch the eye.

Flagship technology without the flagship price

Inside, OnePlus Nord 4 continues the proud OnePlus Nord tradition of taking flagship technology and making it affordable. At its heart is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 chip, this year’s newest processor, which is a quantum leap ahead of standard Snapdragon 7 chips – it features a 65% faster CPU and 130% faster GPU, as well as Qualcomm AI Engine. When measured using benchmarking tool AnTuTu, the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 chip scores a massive 1,500,000 compared to the 990,000 of a standard Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor, meaning flagship level gaming and productivity performance. And with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of storage, users will get flagship storage and no stuttering slowdowns either.

OnePlus Nord 4 also features the largest battery ever fitted to a OnePlus Nord phone, weighing in at 5,500mAh and featuring 100W SUPERVOOC charging. This means it can charge from 1-100% in just 28 minutes and give you 5 hours of Netflix viewing with just a 5-minute top-up. Not only that, the battery is also protected by OnePlus’s self-developed Battery Health Engine, which uses AI to keep its battery at peak fitness. Battery Health Engine uses AI technology to analyze everything from the amount of power going into the phone to the time it reaches 100% charge. And thanks to Battery Health Engine, OnePlus Nord 4’s battery has been tested to survive more than 1,600 charging cycles, over four years of use, with over 80% of its original capacity. That’s more than three times what you’ll find elsewhere.

AI for everyday use

OnePlus has also baked AI technology into every aspect of OnePlus Nord 4. This includes its Trinity Engine software, which helps ensure you get the best day to day performance from your product. It studies your phone’s CPU, RAM and ROM and make sure they’re operating to the best of their ability. It’s like having an AI librarian in your phone’s memory, keeping everything stored neatly, and an AI personal trainer in its processor to help achieve high performance without high levels of stress.

Meanwhile OnePlus Nord 4 also features AI tools for productivity, such as AI Speak and AI Summary, which help share information from a wide range of websites and apps, as well as AI Writer which will compose a long message based on short prompts so you can get right back to that important task. It also features Recording Summary, which will take an hour long meeting recording and turn it into a short written summary in a matter of seconds, as well as producing a transcript.

Photo-ready AI and 50 megapixel Sony sensor

Finally, OnePlus Nord 4 can also use AI to improve images too. As well as previously announced AI tools such as AI Eraser, which removes unwanted people and items from images, OnePlus Nord 4 also features new tools such as AI Best Face, AI Clear Face and AI Smart Cutout 2.0.

AI Smart Cutout 2.0 is perfect for combining photos and adding fun elements to your shots. Users simply select an item they want to copy – for instance a pet, or a loved one – from the first picture, save it as a sticker and then drop it straight into their second picture. Meanwhile the new AI Best Face and AI Clear Face tools are designed to help improve photos when everything didn’t quite go to plan. Whether that’s AI Best Face, coming later in the year, fixing a group selfie so that one friend with their eyes closed can magically open them again, or whether it’s AI Clear Face helping bring high definition to your pics, OnePlus Nord 4 and OnePlus Pad 2 will be ready to salvage that nearly perfect shot.

As well as AI smarts, OnePlus Nord 4 also packs all the hardware users need for superb, social ready snapshots. It's main camera is powered by a 50 megapixel Sony LYT-600 sensor and features Optical Image Stabilisation, ideal for fixing shaky shots. It also features the same RAW photography algorithms seen in the flagship OnePlus 12 Series, allowing expert photographers to adjust and tweak their shot to perfection. OnePlus Nord 4 also features a 112-degree 8 megapixel ultra-wide sensor and a 16 megapixel Sony selfie camera.

Fit for the future

At its Summer Launch Event, OnePlus also announced that OnePlus Nord 4 will receive four major Android updates and six years of security updates, the longest ever support package OnePlus has ever put in place. This will ensure OnePlus Nord 4 remains safe to use for many years to come, but OnePlus also stated that this alone was not enough. At its Summer Launch Event, OnePlus stated that phones with long software commitments but without extensive fast and smooth testing were like strong houses built on weak foundations: they look good, but you wouldn’t want to live in one.

To back up its commitment to providing fast and smooth experiences for its users, OnePlus also announced that OnePlus Nord 4 features the longest ever fluency rating awarded to a phone – 72 months of fluency, as certified by TUV SUD.

To achieve this unheard-of rating, OnePlus Nord 4 was subjected to a grueling range of tests over a tortuous period. These tests involved precisely measuring, using a high-speed camera, how long a new phone takes to open apps and complete a range of basic tasks. The phone was then put into absolute hell by simulating six years of heavy use with a range of highly demanding tests.

These tests involved copying 24GB of 4K video files onto it and deleting them at intervals to fragment the memory. Then creating 8,500 photos, 850 music files and 85 videos. 4,500 pieces of contact information, 15,000 text messages. 1,500 call records. Finally, OnePlus even installed and deleted 180 applications to seriously stress the phone out. Only at this point did OnePlus measure the time it takes to perform the same tasks as at the start, and only when it achieved these tasks in an acceptable time did it pass certification.

Only at this point was OnePlus Nord 4 deemed to have passed its fluency test and officially receive its groundbreaking fluency rating.
