Safran and AWS Announce Strategic Collaboration to Accelerate Innovation in the Aeronautics Industry
PARIS - Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), and Safran (EPA: SAF), a global leader in aeronautics, defense, and space, have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at accelerating Safran’s innovation and digital transformation. Safran has placed technological innovation at the core of its strategy to address major industry challenges: innovating to contribute to aviation's decarbonization ambition, improving supply chain performance, and continuously developing operational excellence. The Group is collaborating with AWS to accelerate the deployment of advanced cloud technologies and generative artificial intelligence (AI) at scale to help address these challenges and accelerate innovation more broadly, according to the official website of Amazon.
An Ambitious Digital Transformation
As Safran's primary cloud provider since 2021, AWS has been helping the company achieve its goal of speeding up and industrializing its digital transformation. This collaboration has enabled the Group to significantly increase its operational agility while maintaining the highest required security standards. Today, Safran is launching a new multi-year phase of its digital transformation, covering application migration to AWS, deployment of modern data platforms based on AWS services including Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Redshift, and the implementation of new use cases by its AI squads. This sets the foundations for a data-driven approach, enabling each group entity to fully exploit its value to improve processes, transform operations, and ensure successful developments.
Generative AI: A Key Accelerator
In particular, Safran is using AWS to evaluate and deploy generative AI in a controlled manner across its various business lines. Safran relies on Amazon Bedrock, a platform that provides access to a wide range of AI models from Meta, Mistral AI, Anthropic, and Amazon. This approach allows Safran to benefit from the latest AI advances while ensuring data confidentiality and necessary control in a critical industrial environment.
Safran has already implemented an initial wave of generative AI projects for its Engineering, Manufacturing, Support, and Services businesses. Building on proven operational efficiency results, Safran is currently accelerating with a second wave of about twenty projects.
"The way Safran is adopting generative AI perfectly illustrates how these advanced technologies can transform the aeronautics industry," emphasizes Julien Groues, Managing Director of AWS France. "By combining Safran's business expertise with AWS's cloud and AI capabilities, we are paving the way for innovations that will redefine aviation performance and safety standards."
"Our collaboration with AWS enables us to accelerate and industrialize our digital transformation by benefiting from agile solutions at the cutting edge of technology, with high-level support and flawless operational reliability. It promotes rapid innovation and adoption across our businesses. It helps strengthen our operational excellence and address our industry's challenges while ensuring our priority of safety," states Frédéric Verger, Chief Digital and Information Systems Officer at Safran.
Safran is an international high-technology group, operating in the aviation (propulsion, equipment and interiors), defense and space markets. Its core purpose is to contribute to a safer, more sustainable world, where air transport is more environmentally friendly, comfortable and accessible. Safran has a global presence, with 100,000 employees and sales of €27.3 billion in 2024, and holds, alone or in partnership, world or regional leadership positions in its core markets.
