Krungsri Accelerates Cloud Migration by More Than 50% for Generative AI Innovation with AWS
The bank leverages AWS to transform customer experience through AI-powered mule account detection, property valuation, and ATM cash distribution
BANGKOK - Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that Bank of Ayudhya PCL (Krungsri), Thailand's fifth-largest bank with operations across six Southeast Asian countries, is cutting its cloud migration time by more than half using generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) agents. Running its workloads on the world’s leading cloud underpins the bank's comprehensive AI strategy, which includes detecting mule accounts, valuing property, and transporting cash to the bank’s more than 5,000 ATMs across Thailand, helping customers better manage their finances and avoid financial crimes, a press release stated by Amazon.
To migrate its data platform, including its data warehouse and machine learning models, from on-premises infrastructure to the cloud faster, Krungsri has developed custom generative AI agents using Amazon Bedrock. These agents run on AWS services like Amazon SageMaker, AWS Lambda, and Amazon EventBridge, and automatically convert programming scripts or code from on-premises to cloud environments. This approach reduces migration time by more than 50% compared to manual code conversion efforts.
The reusable AI agents allow Krungsri to leverage its generative AI assets for future migrations and other data transformation tasks. This enables the bank to scale operations, improve agility, and integrate seamlessly with cloud-native services like migrating machine learning models from the on-premise platform to AWS SageMaker. By creating reusable AI assets such as conversion algorithms, trained models, and automation scripts, Krungsri ensures consistent and efficient code transformation across multiple transformation projects including migrating other codes, such as scripts or ETL processes, data warehouses, and data marts, demonstrating the bank’s long-term AI strategy beyond a one-time cloud migration.
Krungsri's accelerated cloud migration positions the bank well for new Thai regulations launched this year, banning mule account (accounts used to facilitate financial crimes, such as money laundering, fraud, and illicit fund transfers). Using Amazon SageMaker, the bank has shifted from a reactive approach relying on external leads to proactively and automatically detecting fraudulent accounts with greater accuracy while minimizing false positives. By leveraging AWS, Krungsri gains more flexibility in data storage, tools, and performance scalability, helping to protect customers more effectively while reducing disruptions to legitimate account holders.
Krungsri is implementing additional AI initiatives powered by AWS services to further enhance customer experiences. The bank developed a property valuation solution using Amazon SageMaker prediction models for annual asset reviews. Since February 2024, this approach has eliminated over 2,000 on-site property assessments, saving approximately 5 million Baht to date and reducing evaluation from three days to just 15 minutes per case. Using Amazon SageMaker, Krungsri also optimized cash replenishment for ATMs and cash charter car services across Thailand by consolidating 6,000 machine learning models into just three. These models more accurately predict and optimize cash demand, ensuring better ATM availability while efficiently managing cash distribution to enhance customer satisfaction.
"At Krungsri, we’re not just moving to the cloud—we’re transforming how banking works with AI,” said Tul Roteseree, head of Enterprise Data and Analytics Group, Krungsri. “By leveraging generative AI and machine learning on AWS, we are cutting cloud migration time in half and transforming our systems into cloud-powered solutions. This means smarter fraud detection, faster operational processes, and better services for our customers. With AWS, we are building the future of banking—one innovation at a time."
"Krungsri is leading the way in modern banking by using AI and the cloud to protect customers and deliver smarter financial services,” said Vatsun Thirapatarapong, country manager, AWS Thailand. “By leveraging AWS for generative AI, machine learning, and cloud scalability, Krungsri is enhancing fraud prevention capabilities, streamlining operations, and setting new standards for banking in Thailand. We’re proud to support Krungsri in building a more secure, efficient, and AI-driven future for its customers."
