HONOR Launches MagicOS 8.0, Featuring Industry's First Intent-based UI

SHANGHAI - Global technology brand HONOR officially launched MagicOS 8.0 in China, the latest version of its OS with fully integrated platform-level AI and the industry's first to feature a revolutionary intent-based user interface (IUI), according to the official website of HONOR.

Empowered by platform-level AI, HONOR MagicOS 8.0 introduces comprehensive improvements in four areas: smart connectivity, performance, privacy and security, and visual aesthetics. At the launch event, HONOR also debuted MagicLM, its proprietary on-device large language model with seven billion parameters, working within MagicOS to vastly improve the platform-level AI's ability to understand user intentions and further enhance human-centric user experiences.

Underlining its open-collaborative brand ethos, HONOR has also launched an LLM Ecosystem Program, integrating MagicOS with cloud-based large language models from industry partners across different verticals. Companies such as Baidu and Umetrip have already partnered with HONOR, and are working to deliver more innovative user experiences, with the hybrid AI bringing value to consumers.

"We are delighted to launch MagicOS 8.0. This is the culmination of our hard work investing in enriching platform-level AI capabilities, and nurturing the AI ecosystem in collaboration with industry partners," said George Zhao, CEO of HONOR Device Co. Ltd. "From the industry's first AI smartphone supporting MagicLive to the official debut of platform-level AI with MagicOS 7.0, HONOR has innovated with ecosystem partners over the past few years. Now, MagicOS 8.0 and MagicLM represent a significant milestone in HONOR's on-device AI endeavors, and are a significant step towards bringing next-generation human-device interaction and ecosystem to users."

Magic Portal: Next-gen Interaction Based on User Intent

From text-based commands to graphical user interfaces to natural user interfaces, human-device interactions have seen many iterations over the years, and recent developments in AI have once again put them on the cusp of change. The industry-first IUI on MagicOS 8.0 represents the next stage of this evolution. Instead of acting upon request, MagicOS 8.0 renders services according to user intentions. Based on the platform-level AI in MagicLive, the IUI on MagicOS 8.0 can interpret language, images, gestures and eye movements to understand a user's intent and offer services proactively. This innovative process streamlines otherwise complex user operations for a more user-friendly, convenient experience.

With MagicOS 8.0, HONOR introduces Magic Portal, an intent-based shortcut recommendation feature that lets users seamlessly switch and access services between apps and devices with a simple swipe.

In China, Magic Portal is debuting with support for over 100 popular apps across different categories, covering seven common scenarios: travel, productivity, social, search, entertainment, shopping and food. Apps such as Baidu Map, Amap, Didi, Bilibili, Douyin, Youku, and Alipay all add Magic Portal compatibility and take advantage of AI for added user convenience. Combined with MagicRing, it will also enable seamless services across different devices including cars, printers, and more.

Proprietary MagicLM Augments Platform-level AI

MagicOS 8.0 launches with MagicLM, HONOR's proprietary on-device AI large language model which operates at a platform-level. Optimized in a collaborative effort between HONOR and Qualcomm, the seven-billion-parameter MagicLM runs smoothly and efficiently on the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 and contributes to a more personalized, intuitive and secure experience.

With MagicLM, users can enjoy the benefits of a platform-level AI that not only has natural language understanding capabilities, but can also interpret and analyze a range of different interaction modes from text to speech and more. With data processed on the device, this results in more personalized and privacy-protected experiences.

MagicLM's intelligent features can be experienced across various scenarios, such as generating videos with natural language prompts, or accessing personal assistant features and daily planner templates by speaking with the voice assistant YOYO. MagicOS 8.0 is also the first in the industry to allow users to locate a specific frame quickly and easily in their videos based on their query.

LLM Ecosystem Program for Enhanced Hybrid AI Integration

In addition to providing excellent privacy, on-device AI models can serve as intermediaries between the user and cloud-based AI models, searching online resources for information while filtering personally identifiable details to ensure maximum privacy.

To spearhead this development, HONOR has launched an LLM Ecosystem Program in China to promote the integration of cloud-based and vertical AI models into MagicOS, opening MagicOS to more partners to provide users with more personalized, seamless and secure experiences.

At the launch event, HONOR showcased collaborative MagicLM-integrated experiences with a hybrid AI model. It highlighted partners including Amap, Baidu and Umetrip, all of which will officially launch with enhanced capabilities in the first half of 2024, with more to come in the future.

Smart Experiences Elevated by the Power of Platform-level AI

Advancements in HONOR's platform-level AI have elevated the intelligent experience. MagicRing – one of four core MagicOS technologies – is now more streamlined and intelligent, delivering a truly seamless user experience.

"At HONOR, we always strive to produce human-centric technology that works seamlessly across devices and applications," said Fei Fang, President of Product Line, HONOR Device Co., Ltd. "After years of hard work and persistence, we are pleased to launch MagicOS 8.0, as we take great strides towards our goal of creating a new intelligent world with seamless connectivity and the utmost privacy and security."

MagicRing now supports connections from point-to-point networks to fully connected networks, with 25% better power efficiency and 500% improved speed. It also supports eight transmission channels, allowing for calls, notifications, keyboard and mouse, files, app windows and photos to seamlessly flow across devices.

More devices, including printers, smartwatches and vehicles can also be connected through MagicRing to help users live a more connected lifestyle. Tapping into HONOR's expanding network of automobile partners, users can use MagicRing to connect their HONOR smartphones with key car brands in China and enjoy the benefits of seamlessly switching between services thanks to Magic Portal.

Privacy and Security Safeguarded by On-device AI

When it comes to AI, user privacy is HONOR's utmost priority. In safeguarding privacy and security, MagicOS 8.0 introduces system-wide Parallel Spaces and adds bar smartphones to the list of supported devices. Images and files can also be loaded into the private space through Magic Portal. A shake-to-block ads feature has also been implemented to eliminate intrusive pop-up ads that negatively impact the user experience. Thanks to on-device AI, users can enjoy the seamless experience of MagicOS 8.0 while being safe in the knowledge that personal data is processed securely on the device.
